The Vikings Should Let Kirk Cousins Walk in Free Agency

The Minnesota Vikings have had Kirk Cousins as their starting quarterback since 2018, but as his contract nears its end, the team must make a crucial decision. While Cousins has had some solid performances during his tenure, there are several compelling reasons why the Vikings should consider letting him walk in free agency.

One of the primary concerns with keeping Kirk Cousins is his hefty price tag. It was reported earlier today that he is looking for about $90M in guaranteed money, according to Charley Walters. His contract consumes a significant portion of the team’s salary cap, limiting their ability to invest in other areas, such as strengthening the offensive line or adding defensive playmakers. By letting Cousins go, the Vikings can allocate those funds more efficiently across the roster.

While Cousins has shown flashes of brilliance, his performances in crucial moments have been inconsistent. He has struggled in prime-time games and against playoff-caliber teams, often failing to deliver when the team needs him the most. The Vikings need a quarterback who can rise to the occasion and lead the team to victory in critical situations. There’s a few examples of this, but the three yard pass on fourth and eight vs the Giants in the playoffs last season is the first one that comes to mind. By exploring other options in free agency or the draft, the Vikings may find a more cost effective and clutch quarterback.

Since Cousins joined the Vikings, the team has made the playoffs just twice in six seasons. While not solely responsible for the team’s postseason shortcomings, Cousins has not been able to lead them to deep playoff runs. In the NFL, success is often measured by postseason achievements, and the Vikings may need a change at the quarterback position to take the next step and compete for a Super Bowl.

Parting ways with Cousins could provide an opportunity for the Vikings to develop a young quarterback. Whether through the draft or by signing a promising prospect, the team can invest in a player with long-term potential. Developing a young quarterback allows for a more sustainable and cost-effective approach, as they can be groomed to lead the team for years to come. This strategy has worked well for several teams in recent years, and the Vikings should consider taking a similar path. There’s a variety of options in the draft. Could the Vikings make a huge splash and go for Caleb Williams or Drake Maye? The Vikings could also maybe trade down in the trade and still attain JJ McCarthy or Michael Penix Jr. There are plenty of options on the table, regarding the draft.

While Kirk Cousins has had some decent moments as the Vikings’ quarterback, it may be time for the team to move on. The cost-effectiveness of his contract, inconsistent performances in key moments, limited playoff success, and the potential for developing a young quarterback all make a compelling case for letting Cousins walk in free agency. The Vikings must carefully evaluate their options and make a decision that sets them up for long-term success. Either way, it’ll be an important few months for the future of the Minnesota Vikings.
